Moss Man

Random story. The other day I went to the copy room a noticed a scent I haven’t smelled for a long time. I don’t know if it was cologne or what but when I walked by the finance department it smelled the same, and it totally took me back to being a little kid in the mid-80s. It smelled just like the Moss Man He-Man figure that I had!

Does anyone else remember Moss Man? I thought he squirted water but so far I can’t find any evidence of such on Google, though someone did say Moss Man smells like Patchouli, hehe. Man, blast from the past… He-Man was awesome back in the day. Isn’t it amazing how a distinct smell can take you back to a specific time and place?

  1. Moss Man didn’t squirt water. His only special feature was being furry. I still have him at home in Layton.

What the? That is one freaky looking action figure.

I was like six months old when it went off the air–what in the world did He-Man and Moss Man and the gang do?

  3. Joel, I think being scented is a special feature too ๐Ÿ˜‰ Or did your moss man not smell funky?

Sus- I don’t know. I don’t even know if Moss Man was a good guy or a bad guy. I thought I read he was a good guy, but I honestly don’t remember much from the cartoons outside of the main characters.

Ahh, he-man. I liked the He-Man figure where if you hit his chest it would show damage. “My chest! My bloody chest…. my outfit.”

ahhhhhhh. what a nice memory. I too had moss man, and yes, he did have a certain smell. I don’t know if it was patchouli or not – seeing as how I didn’t know what that was when I was into He-man. Personally, I don’t think it was patchouli, though, because it would remind me of moss man every time I smell it, but it doesn’t. So. Who knows?

I LOVED He-Man. That was such a huge part of my childhood. And, yes, I remember the battle-damage He-Man characters. Those were AWESOME. We had Castle Greyskull, and Skeletor’s castle, and all of the action figures.

What a great memory. Thanks Sloanie!

  5. i ditto travis’s comments. he-man was the best. i still remember the christmas i woke up and there was a castle greyskull all set up with a bunch of other he-man stuff – one of the best christmases ever!

  6. I remember when Dad threatened to throw my She-ra action figure into the fire if I didn’t take care of it. I had this horrible image of her melting in fire…I think I’m still traumatized by that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Dude the best was my friend who had Skeletor’s castle because it had this “microphone” that you could talk into and it made your voice all warped. Without batteries too! Such cool toys… I love retro cartoons and toys.

Travis– I have no idea what patchouli smells like so I wouldn’t know ๐Ÿ˜‰

patchouli oil smells like druggies. Ha ha. People who smoke pot use it to “mask” the smell. Or, at least, that’s the stereotype. Some people just like the way it smells – but usually it’s people who do drugs, or hug trees. Ha ha.

by the way, I did a search on Google, and the most common scent used referring to Moss Man was a “pine scent.” Apparently he smelled like a car freshener. Ha ha.

  10. yeah- it was totally a taxi air freshener. i put my moss man in my closet to make my clothes smell like it.

[“good. you’ve identified it. step 2 is washing it out.”]

he-man was the awesomest. i was talking to some guys i didn’t know the other day about retro toys and the conversation degenerated into talking about the snoopy sno-cone machine. but he-man was the best. and let’s not forget battle cat. remember their secret identities? i had to look them up. prince adam and cringer. and i had totally forgotten about orko.. that red thing that floated around. “BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL, I HAVE THE POWER!” that show is where i learned the word “fake.” there was the bad guy who looked like he-man. his name was faker. nice.

  11. I don’t recall mine smelling like pine at all. Maybe some spice or herb, but not pine– it was more distinct than pine. Maybe mine was defective, heh.

Ahhh Prince Adam and Cringer… yeah Cringer was a big wuss huh. Kinda reminds me of the Superman / Clark Kent secret identity. And we totally had the snoopy sno-cone machine… crazy.

  12. Oh trippy. The Snoopie sno-cone machine. I don’t think I’ve thought about that thing for 15 years…or longer.

  13. Yeah Moss Man had a smell but it was more just the material than an intentional scent I think. But I remember it. It was distinct. I miss the battle damage figurines or the crab guy with the claw that opened and closed or the bee guy with his big wings.
