One of the reason’s I’ve been itching to get my blog running is one of my newer toys: The Canon PowerShot SD10 Digital Elph. This baby is so small that it fits in my pocket better than even my wallet– so this thing goes everywhere that I go, making candid and spur of the moment shots a reality. So far I’m impressed with the image quality, and as you can probably see by these pics, I am loving the super macro mode it has. It by far outshines the macro function on my other Canon (the S40). Though the broccoli is a bit blurry (I only made one attempt at it at lunch today) I can usually get pretty detailed pics up real close. Hence my statement in my previous post that I’d like to explore texture and color more– the super macro mode makes it possible to pick up textures on all sorts of things, and I’ve been taking pictures for the last month and a half already.

This thing is also so small that it’s fairly inconspicuous when I take pics with it– it looks a lot like a small cell phone.

Drawbacks of the camera– no optical viewfinder (rough when it’s too bright outside to see the LCD well) and no optical zoom (I can live with out it as long as I have another camera that does have it).

In any case, let me know if you have any problems viewing the site. I’m sure I’ll be gradually updating and tweeking it. Right now it doesn’t display properly on my CSS impaired POS Mac at work (Mac OS 9.1 and IE 5.1 suck), but it seems to display fine on PC’s elsewhere. Let me know if you have any comments or problems. (Yes I know the header is huge– hehehe… that was intentional.)

So the pics? Yeah, I’ve long been opposed to eating salad for lunch. Just not enough substance, I’ve always felt. Well, a week and a half ago I committed myself to hitting the gym at least 4 times a week, and with that comes the motivation to try to be a little more healthy.

What I’ve found? Salads sound more enticing when you’re trying to eat better and they’re actually not that bad. I won’t rely on salad alone to give me energy for the gym, but they’re definitely a good option for lunch (of course I usually will get one with chicken in it, like this over-priced salad from Chick-Fil-A).

I find that I have to make commitments and consciously stick to them in order to improve. It’s one thing to realize you need to do something and say you’re going to do it, but seemingly a completely different thing to plan for it, do it, and keep it on your mind mentally to help continue to do it and make it a habit. I guess it also helps to make it a priority– the more important you feel and think it actually doing the activity is, the more likely you are to stick to your commitment. Just some things I’ve noticed this last couple weeks as I’ve made some lifestyle changes…

Hey heebs, what’s up with your camera situation? You still looking into that S400 or what? I saw an S500 today– it was a perfectly sized bar of soap, hehe.

I found my way over here from Llew’s blog, and holy Heloise, I LOVE the photos! I never knew a Chik-Fil-A salad could look so good! I find pictures with intense color and interesting angles to be oh-so fascinating and yours have both spades. I’ll be begging my significant other for a digital camera now.

  5. Welcome to Sloanie.com 😉 And yeah– I hesitate to do another post because I enjoy the bright colors of the salad myself. And I love detailed close-ups… so if you do get a digital camera and want that feature pay attention to how close you can get to the subject to take macro shots– I couldn’t focus nearly that closely with my first digital camera.

  6. it’s amazing, the world that exists on such a small scale. when i first saw that broccoli shot i thought it was barley hops.

i heard a theory once that the earth is merely an electron orbiting a nucleus of an atom on a different scale, and some gargantuan scientist would split that atom one day…. hmmmmm.

  7. To think I talked trash on you on Llew’s blog the other day because I didn’t think you had your site up and running yet. Good to see you back up and running.

    Joel-

No worries. Of course I made no announcement and put my “new” blog in a different directory than my last one, but timing with my meetup with Llew was such that she basically announced it on my site by linking it in her post. Now I just need to UPDATE, hehe.
